Wow! You can almost walk across the river, anywhere you want, just hopping from iceberg to ice berg! How convenient! Just kidding, don't try that... Give it some time, let the ice flow through. When it warms a bit, it'll fish O.K. with nymphs. San juans, rubber legs and little pheasant-tail stuff under thingamabobbers will get you hooked up.

The lower 'Root will fish well when the weather is a bit milder, but for now, it's a chilly proposition. Nymphing deep or slow-crawling streamers and crayfish patterns will get you into some fish durring those nicer winter days ahead. For now, indoor chores make more sense.

Sometimes it's just to frigid, even for the gnarliest of the the gnarly. But as soon as the temps reach into the forties it'll be go time. Deep, slow-moving streamers and tandem nymph rigs will be the medicine. Today, staying home and watching "A River Runs Through It" makes more sense.

Missouri River at Holter Dam

Probably one of the better year-round fisheries in the country, the MO will fish all winter. There are legitimate dry-fly oppertunities still, with BWO and midges bringing fish up on warmer afternoons. You can count on very steady nymphing with zebra midges, czech nymphs, micro mayfly patterns, scuds, pink stuff and san juans (especially near the dam). The streamer bite is dependable most low-light days as well, so swinging sparkle minnows, crystal buggers, half and halfs and leeches can result in a huge fish.

Winter fishing is one of the perks of living in our area. Rock Creek is one of the better winter-fishing options around. After bundling up and hooking a few fish in the chilly water, warm meals are tastier, pajamas are heavenly, and the HD on your TV is sharper than ever. See for yourself as soon as we get some daytime-highs that creep into the forties. You'll find that this whole fly fishing-thing still kind of works in the winter and, what's this?? Parking spots everywhere?? Goodness me!!

West Fork of The Bitterroot River

Like everything else right now, the West Fork is a chilly place to walk around with a fly rod. Fish, however, are still in the same spots and will eat the same nymphs. Keep an eye on the mercury and give the West Fork a try as soon as it makes sense!

It's cold. But if you must scratch the itch, wait untill the warmest part of the day and go dredge some nymphs until things get numb. With any sort of warm-up, expect good sub-surface fishing, with a tandem nymph rig probably being your best option. San Juans, little lighting bugs and copper johns off the back of a small or medium rubber-legs should keep things interesting. Picking a day when it's comfortable enough outside to fish with some patience is more important than fly choice right now. The same nymphs will work, but will your fingers?
