Bitterroot River Fishing Report + Rating

3.5/5

April 19, 2024

The Bitterroot has dropped and it good fishable shape.  Dry fly action hasn’t gotten back into shape just yet, but that should change any day now.  Fish will still eat a Skwala and there are some BWO’s, March Brown’s and Gray Drakes are out.  Fish should start to looking up!  Be ready with all the above.  Nymphing has been the best method out there this week with Rubberlegs, TJ Hookers, 20 Inchers, San Juans, Jig PT’s, Perdigons and Spanish Bullets.  Streamer fishing has been hit or miss, but if we get some clouds it could be a good option.  Baby Gonga’s, Mini-Boogiemen, Rusty Trombones, Goldies, Chicago Overcoats, Yum Yums and Mason’s Junior.

There are a lot of downed trees and blockages in the Bitterroot.  Give our Missoula fly shop a call for up-to-date information.

1/2 off Friday’s are still happening, every Friday all year long. (1/2 off your first dozen dries or nymphs)

Montana SNOTEL Current Snow Water Equivalent % of Normal

SWE is an acronym for Snow Water Equivalent, signifying the quantity of liquid water present in snow. Essentially, if you were to take a certain snow depth and melt it, the resulting water height would be representative of the SWE. This is how we can predict river flows and water levels for fishing season.
